TOBACCO
ADDICTION
|
The
use of tobacco quickly produces a dependency as much physical
as psychological. The fundamental cause of this dependence is
nicotine, which has a high addictive capacity.
|
Tobacco
increases the risk of lung cancer in men 25 fold and in woman
12,5 fold. For heavy smokers (more than 25 cigarettes per day)
the risk of developing diseases is 40 times higher than in non
smokers. Addiction to tobacco increases the risk of cancer of
mouth, lip and pharynx eightfold and to a lesser proportion
cancer of the estomach, oesophagus and bladder.
|
Treatments
recommended by this Pharmacy are aids to stop smoking provided
that the patient is pre-disposed to give up smoking.
|
|
Chantix
(Pfizer) is specifically designed to partially activate the nicotinic
receptor and reduce the severity of the smoker's craving and the
withdrawal symptoms from nicotine. Moreover, if a person smokes
a cigarette while receiving treatment, Chantix has the potential
to diminish the sense of satisfaction associated with smoking.
This may help to prevent the cycle of nicotine addiction. |
ZYNTABAC
50 mg. 60 tablets
(bupropion hydrochloride)
|
Diminishes
the desire to smoke. The treatment is of a 7-12 weeks duration. |
NICOTINELL
(nicotine patches)
|
|
|
These
patches provide the quantity of nicotine necessary to reduce
the symptoms of craving whilst giving up smoking. It gradually
reduces nicotine levels over a period of three months until
such time as the body is able to do without.
